FOUNDER
My name is Jamiana Tan, and I’m the founder and designer of Hilia Swim, a Native Hawaiian wahine-owned swimwear brand based in Kona, Hawaiʻi.
Hilia Swim began in 2020, during a time when the world slowed down and the ocean became a place of grounding for so many of us. I had spent years buying bathing suits that never quite fit right, and I started wondering why. With no formal training, I taught myself how to cut patterns and sew, experimenting with fabric, thread, and fit until I could create something that actually felt good to wear.
The first swimsuit I ever made was for my younger sister. That experience changed everything. It showed me how powerful it can be to create something intentionally, specifically for the body in front of you. From there, my goal became simple: to create swimwear of such good quality that you don’t just see it—you feel it.
Every Hilia Swim piece is still handmade and customizable, created with care and respect for individuality. As the brand has grown, so has my hope to help make Hawaiʻi known not only for its beauty, but for its craftsmanship and creative talent.
In September 2026, Hilia Swim was invited to present a collection at New York Fashion Week. This opportunity is something I never imagined when I first sat down at a sewing machine—but it’s also something I don’t want to experience alone.
As a Native Hawaiian brand, it’s important to me that this moment creates access for others. My goal is to bring local Hawaiʻi models to New York Fashion Week and give ʻōpio from our islands the chance to walk a global stage while staying rooted in who they are and where they come from.
This journey takes resources, support, and community. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who believes in this vision and helps make it possible.
Mahalo for being part of this story.
With gratitude,
Jamiana
